What it is

Holy Week in Granada has been declared of International Tourist Interest. For eight days, from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday, the city's brotherhoods and confraternities take their floats out onto the streets; the Royal Federation of Holy Week Brotherhoods and Confraternities of Granada coordinates times and routes and publishes the official guide every year.

Its hallmark is the setting: the processions blend with the slopes and small squares of the Albaicín and the Realejo, with districts such as the Zaidín and with the historic centre, often with snow-capped Sierra Nevada in the background. There are brotherhoods of silence and neighbourhood brotherhoods, and floats depicting scenes of the Passion, the figure of Christ and the Virgin under a canopy.

The City Council plays a prominent role: on Good Friday the full Council attends the official procession of the Holy Sepulchre and the Virgin of Solitude of Calvary, and it is honorary senior brother of several brotherhoods.

Where

All over the city: the Albaicín, the Realejo, the Zaidín and the historic centre. The official routes converge on the centre, passing along the Carrera de la Virgen, Ángel Ganivet, Puerta Real, Reyes Católicos and Mesones to the Plaza de las Pasiegas, where the brotherhoods make their station in the Cathedral, entering through the Puerta del Perdón.

Customs and traditions

Each day has its own highlights. On Holy Monday people wait for the Virgin of Sorrows to leave and return to the church of San Pedro; on Holy Tuesday a brotherhood makes its way through the streets of the Albaicín from San Juan de los Reyes; Maundy Thursday night is lived above all in the Albaicín; and on Good Friday, early in the afternoon, the meeting point is the Campo del Príncipe in the Realejo. On Easter Sunday the week closes with a procession in which children take part.

Chairs are set out along the route and are paid to the collector if there is a free seat; they cannot be booked.
