The stormy and rainy weather affecting Andalucía since Saturday has left 62 emergencies in the province of Granada, according to the Andalusian Emergency Agency (EMA 1-1-2), attached to the Regional Ministry of Presidency, Health and Emergencies. Most have been concentrated this Monday in Motril, with 14 alerts between 12:40 and 13:40 hours.

Rescue in Motril

In Motril, firefighters rescued two elderly people who had been trapped by a flood in their home on plaza de Venus. The alert was received at 12:48 and the rescue ended at 13:50. The alerts in Motril have been mainly due to flooding of streets, homes, shops and car parks, as well as overflowing drains and cut-off roads. The rupture of an irrigation channel with a risk of flooding, the presence of containers on the road and a collision between two vehicles on the A-7 have also been reported.

Fewer incidents than Sunday

Across Andalucía, 673 emergencies have been handled between 12:00 on Saturday, October 17 and 18:30 this Monday. Almería has the highest number, with 175, followed by Cádiz (155) and Málaga (150). After them are Sevilla (81), Granada (62), Córdoba (38), Jaén (seven) and Huelva (five). This Monday, 81 emergencies were recorded up to the close of the report, compared with 323 on Sunday and 269 on Saturday, which represents a decrease in the incidence of the stormy weather. The incidents have been related above all to flooding of homes, premises, garages and public roads, problems in basic services, rescues and salvage operations, obstacles on roads and landslides.

Activated plans and closed roads

The Emergency Plan for Flood Risk in Andalucía (PERI) remains activated in the emergency phase, operational situation 1. At 18:30 this Monday, 22 local territorial plans remain operational, four of them in the province of Granada: Alhama de Granada, Moclín, Lújar and Motril. The CO-4103, between Bujalance and Villa del Río; the CO-4207, between Montilla and Montalbán de Córdoba, including the La Zarza bridge; and the SE-6300, in Lebrija (Sevilla), remain closed to traffic in both directions.

Alerts for Tuesday

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts for this Tuesday, October 20 yellow alerts for rain in the Jaén districts of Morena y Condado, Cazorla y Segura and Valle del Guadalquivir, in force between 06:00 and 11:59, for rainfall of 15 litres per square metre in one hour.

What to do

The Emergency Agency recommends avoiding unnecessary travel during heavy rain and checking the state of roads before setting out. A flooded road, a rambla or a stream should never be crossed, neither on foot nor by vehicle, and it is advisable to stay away from channels, underpasses and low-lying areas. In the event of flooding, go up to upper floors and avoid basements, garages and ground floors, without going down to move vehicles or using lifts. In any risk situation, call 1-1-2, free and available 24 hours a day, and state the location and what is happening.
