The Andalusian public universities have conveyed to the Andalusian Government the urgency of resolving their budget gap. They did so at a meeting held this Wednesday in Seville between the Regional Minister for University, Industry, Energy and Innovation, Jorge Paraleda, and the rectors and the rector of the public universities of Andalusia.
The spokesperson for the universities, Paco Oliva, has called on the Junta to give a definitive response to the financial sufficiency problems of the academic institutions.
A deficit of 44 million
In 2025, the nine public on-campus universities recorded an overall negative result of 44 million euros. According to Oliva, that figure is mainly due to the lack of coverage of the real staff and Social Security costs.
To address this situation, both parties set up a Technical Working Commission in April, which is in the final phase of its analyses. Its conclusions will be delivered between the end of this week and the beginning of the next.
"It was essential to carry out technical work to move from demands to proven facts and data. This commission has compared the income we receive for staff costs with the real needs of the centres," Oliva explained.
The spokesperson added that the results of the study will make it possible to set the extraordinary funding that the universities need immediately in 2026 and must be the starting point for the regional budgets.
An outstretched hand to the new government
At the meeting, the Regional Ministry set out the general lines of its industrial development and knowledge transfer project. The universities have shown their willingness to work jointly and have pointed to common ground on matters such as the calendar of research calls, the strengthening of degree programmes and the attraction of talent. However, they have made the proper development of these proposals conditional on the definitive resolution of the structural underfunding of the public university.
What happens now
The universities call for caution while awaiting the opinion of the Technical Commission, whose conclusions will be known between the end of this week and the beginning of the next. Their goal, they indicate, is to achieve full compliance with the current funding model and to secure the resources to maintain the quality of the public system.
