What it is

Mariana Pineda was a woman from Granada committed to the liberal cause in the time of Ferdinand VII. She was executed in Granada on 26 May 1831 and has since become a symbol of freedom and of the struggle for equality, a figure deeply rooted in the city's popular memory.

The City Council lists her day among Granada's main festivals. Every 26 May the City Council walks in procession from the Plaza del Carmen to the square that bears her name, where her monument stands, and lays flowers there. The procession is headed by the municipal chest in which her remains were moved, carried by pages in period dress.

The monument in the Plaza de Mariana Pineda was declared a Place of Democratic Memory by the Spanish Government in July 2024. The house in Calle Águila where she lived before being imprisoned is now home to the Mariana Pineda European Women's Centre, which organises a programme of activities in her memory during May.

Where

The procession leaves from the Plaza del Carmen, in front of the City Hall, and ends in the Plaza de Mariana Pineda, at the foot of the statue that presides over it. The Mariana Pineda European Women's Centre, in Calle Águila, hosts many of the month's activities.

Customs and traditions

The civic procession crosses the centre with the city standard, the mace-bearers and the councillors, accompanied by members of historical re-enactment associations in period dress. At the monument, the City Council and the Municipal Women's Council lay flowers and the Municipal Music Band plays the anthem of Granada.

In the preceding weeks there are guided tours of Mariana Pineda's house, talks, theatre and activities for schoolchildren.
