The Tourism Development Plan for the Granada Poniente region, launched in May 2024, has already executed 1,764,582 euros of the 2,480,000 planned, which represents an economic execution rate of 71.15%. Another 397,838 euros are in execution. The project covers 18 municipalities and more than 2,000 square kilometres in the districts of Los Montes Occidentales, Loja and Alhama de Granada.

What has been done

Among the actions carried out, highlights include the design and digitalisation of a network of 21 cycling and walking routes totalling 280 kilometres, the renovation of the museography of four interpretation centres, and access and lighting improvements at six heritage sites, such as the Hospital de la Reina, the watchtowers of Moclín, the Mesa de Fornes and the Nacimiento Gordo. On sustainability, 17 charging points have been installed for 34 electric vehicles and 34 electric bicycles, as well as 405 solar photovoltaic modules, which will avoid around 90 tonnes of CO₂ per year. Environmental restoration work has also been carried out on the Vilano stream and the Salado river.

Artificial intelligence and promotion

The strategy incorporates solutions based on Artificial Intelligence (AI), such as a visit planner, the creation of digital twins of heritage sites such as the Alcazaba de Loja and the Villa Romana de Salar, and a documentary series on historical figures from the region. The brand «Territorio Poniente, la Última Frontera de Granada» has been consolidated, with a new web platform and a bank of more than 1,000 high-resolution images. The plan also includes three preliminary projects to create buffer spaces that protect 20 regional tourism facilities against flood risk.
