The bell of the Torre de la Vela of the Alhambra rang again this Sunday, October 18, for a reason different from the usual one: to remember Federico García Lorca ninety years after his assassination. The ringing took place at twelve noon for three minutes and was repeated half an hour later, with a sequence of three rings every eight seconds.

A day of music and memory

The ringing was part of «Réquiem por Lorca», an artistic initiative promoted by the Fundación García Lorca that has brought music, heritage and memory to different spaces in the city. According to the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife, under the Consejería de Cultura, Patrimonio Histórico y Deporte, the monuments stopped being mere settings to become part of a collective evocation of the poet from Fuente Vaqueros. Other spaces of the Alhambra, such as the Plaza de los Aljibes and the Silla del Moro, joined the bell of the Torre de la Vela within that city tour dedicated to the poet.

Morente and Lorca, united by music

One of the central elements of the proposal was «Campanas por el poeta», the composition by Enrique Morente that contributed to the tribute another of the great voices of Granada's culture. According to the Junta, Lorca and Morente met again symbolically through music.

The minister highlights the role of the Alhambra

The minister of Cultura, Patrimonio Histórico y Deporte, Patricia del Pozo, has highlighted the participation of the Patronato in the initiative. «The Alhambra is an exceptional monument that we have the responsibility to conserve and protect, but it is also a living space, deeply linked to the cultural history of Granada», Del Pozo has stated, who has stressed the importance of collaboration between institutions to spread Lorca's legacy.
