The Granada Convention Bureau has distinguished 68 professionals from teams and institutions that have promoted the city and the province as a conference destination. The awards ceremony was held at the Carmen de los Mártires.
The Granada Convention Bureau (GCB) has recognised 68 professionals as ambassadors for their role in attracting conferences and events to Granada and its province. The distinction was presented at an event held at the Carmen de los Mártires, attended by around two hundred people, including authorities, recognised professionals, companies and agents from the meetings, conferences and incentives sector, known as MICE.
What the recognition means
The awardees received a handcrafted piece made by Cerámicas Albaicín. According to the GCB, these are the leaders of the teams and institutions that, since the pandemic, have managed to attract this type of event, which the organisation considers key for the tourism sector and the development of the province.
The gala, which the organisation plans to hold every year from now on, also served to underline the importance of the MICE sector for Granada's economy. The GCB has linked this first edition with the city's candidacy for European Capital of Culture in 2031, to which it symbolically adhered during the event. The organisation maintains that culture, heritage, professional excellence and the holding of events are determining factors for attracting conferences and meetings.
Institutional speeches
The rector of the University of Granada, Pedro Mercado, spoke on behalf of the awardees and stated that «it is a satisfaction to see how Granada continues to gain prominence as the best meeting space for science, culture and knowledge». Mercado added that these meetings «generate knowledge and international projection, but also have a significant impact on the local economy».
The mayor of Granada, Marifrán Carazo, stressed that «behind every conference that Granada hosts there are people whose effort and commitment make it possible» and thanked them for their contribution to positioning the city as an international benchmark for knowledge.
The Regional Minister of Culture, Historical Heritage and Sport, Patricia del Pozo, thanked the recognition given to the Alhambra and the Generalife, «a monumental complex that, with more than 2.7 million visitors a year, exerts an unrepeatable fascination and magnetism». Del Pozo also recalled the Venetian diplomat Andrea Navagero, who 500 years ago promoted the writing of sonnets in the Italian style at the Alhambra.
The event was attended by the mayor of Granada, Marifrán Carazo; the Regional Minister of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía, Patricia del Pozo; the rector of the University of Granada, Pedro Mercado, and the president of the Granada Chamber of Commerce, Gerardo Cuerva. It was co-organised by the Patronato de la Alhambra y el Generalife and ended with a performance by the Asociación de Coros y Danzas de Granada.
